Variations on a Theme

I tried to make another abstract sonnet. I made two "quatrains" and ended up liking the second one, but not the first. Then the hustle and bustle of life set in and I never returned to the comic. So it ended up being more like two variations on a theme. Eventually, I think I'll return to the second "quatrain" and make comic more in its style.

Like most of the Prologue, I started out sketching the spread on notebook paper. Man am I glad the ears didn't end up that big on the final version!

Demos for Pages 2 + 3 of My Life in Records #1

If you recall from last week, I used to scribble out my layouts on scratch paper. This nearly indecipherable image above is drawn on lined notebook paper.

Eventually, I made a tighter sketch which is posted below.

If you look closely, you can see a check mark in the bottom left hand corner of the sketch. I like to put those on my thumbnails when I've finished drawing the final page. Sometimes I even add the dates that I penciled and inked the final page. (I rarely pencil and ink a page on the same day.)

I've been reading up some more on Caravaggio and his contemporaries. Apparently, Pope Clement VII was a big fan of coffee, which the church saw as Satanic since it was drunk by the Muslims. (Further medieval logic: Muslims don't drink wine and therefore cannot partake of the Eucharist and thus are from Satan.)

Anyhoo, Clement the VII found it tasty and baptized coffee so it would be safe for Catholics to drink. I have yet to find a worthy source for this little tidbit of fact about Pope Clement, so take it with a grain of salt. It could turn out to be an internet hoax perpetuated by bloggers like me.

From Outtakes

I've decided to post some of my thumbnail and rough drawings that I made while making My Life in Records #1. Since I've already established the non-canonical stories as "B-Sides", I thought I'd play up the music lingo puns some more and call these drawings "Demos" and "Outtakes".

"Demos", of course, are rougher versions of the final pages and "Outtakes" are sequences that didn't make it into the final book.

So here we go!

The picture above was meant to be the title page. I was in the habit of making little booklets out of scratch paper to make my thumbnails and roughs. This was a habit that went by the wayside when i realized that I sometimes wanted to shuffle sections around or redo a page completely. Of course this story had been drawn once already, so I had an idea of how many pages it would take and the sequence I had in mind. You can see I scribbles notes about color hex codes, appointments and~~phone numbers~~(redacted, of course).

I originally wanted the reader to have that sense of expectancy I used to get when I first put the needle down on the record and you heard the initial vinyl crackle before the first track started. For the final version I have opted for a more economic way of starting the book and this section is now, as they say, "on the cutting floor".

A Year in Review

Over all, 2011 was a good year for me. I got some graduate credit to hunker down and polish up some curriculum and make some corresponding podcasts. In May, my wife and I celebrated six years of marital bliss and a few short months later we celebrated the first birthday of our twin daughters.

Probably the biggest news for me in 2011, was finishing my Masters in Art Education and having my thesis accepted for publication in a scholarly journal. I was planning on writing my thesis on comic books in art education, and my adviser suggested that I make the thesis a comic book about comic books. There were a few articles of this type that had been published in this manner, but no one had created an entire Masters Thesis as a comic book.

It was a good year for as far as putting out mini comics, too. In April I put out Dodo Comics #1 which collected a lot of odds and ends I'd made for the last six years. Next I worked all summer on a remastered and reworked version of My Life in Records #1 and also on the second issue of Dodo Comics. On a whim a put together a little accordion book about an undersea adventure. Justin over at the Poopsheet Foundation said, "Thomas indicated that this “accordion” folded gem is free with any order from him, and I’ll tell you it’s worth ordering something else just to get your hands on this."

So four minis in a year. Not bad for a guy with two kids wrapping up a degree!

Work in Progress - Neck Beard!

I'm pretty sure this is my first attempt at drawing a character with a neck-beard.

Here we see Agatho putting a stone in his mouth to remind him to keep quiet. My guess is that he put a pebble in his mouth, but since comics are a visual medium, I changed the pebble into a brick-like rock. It's funnier to look at and also gives a nod to George Herriman's Krazy Kat strips.

Sometimes I use a digital version of Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies to help with writer's block. To me, they're kind of like secular Tarot Cards.

In this particular story, they worked themselves in as a plot element. I'm hoping it makes it into this spring's Dodo Comics #3.

30 Days Comics: Hitting the Wall

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm getting burned out on drawing comics. Let me clarify. I'm getting burned out on drawing new comics and posting them daily.

This month, I've been a part of Derik Badman's 30 Days Comics challenge. I’ve welcomed the 30 day challenge as a way to break out of my rut, but it is not my preferred mode of making comics. I’ve grown more accustomed to working for long stretches on a comic book project with several drafts and not post the work until I’ve got things more or less polished.

It would have been so easy to just do the whole autobio thing, but instead I tried to stretch myself. I started making a comic from the perspective of a woman in her fifties with some stuff about alchemy mixed in. These are two subjects I know very little about. I'm a man in my thirties and I had to scour the local library for books on alchemy as I've gone along.

I just put out my latest little mini, Dodo Comics #2, so this period after a release I would customarily be working on new stories and averaging three thumbnail pages a week. I try to have 50 pages of stories and pare it down to the best 2 or 3 stories.

This is a process I picked up from songwriting. When I used to make albums, I’d shoot for having a 10 song record, but I’d write 20 songs and pick the best ones.

The 30 Days Comics challenge has pushed me to make stories faster, which has been great, but I’ve also felt a little exposed since I’ve essentially been posting a stream of conscience first draft on a daily basis. It’s a mixed bag. I’m happy with some of what I’ve come up with under the pressure, but I’m also afraid that I’ve started a story that I may not be able to finish.

I’m a sucker for making little charts to help me stay motivated as I work. I’ll spare you the boring details about how I score myself. Basically, I figure out what my deadline is for a project and factor in what kind of pace I think I can work at. This chart includes those 50 pages of thumbnails that I’m shooting for before officially starting work on Dodo Comics #3. You can see that this month’s challenge has put me ahead of my schedule.

Ultimately, what am I trying to say here? I’m frustrated by having to show off my drafts. Yet, I’m grateful for the pace that’s been set this month, because its pushed me to go ahead with ideas that I would normally second guess, which has revealed some interesting results.

Making Visual Narratives: Summer Highlights

Summer is nearly over and while I've gotten a lot of comics done this summer, I haven't spent as much time as I planned to on my other site, Making Visual Narratives.

Partly, this is because I was having a blast being a Dad and partly this is because I was totally burned out thinking about school things after graduating with a Masters in Art Education.

I did manage to post a few things over the summer, which might be of interest to you readers over on this site.

In June, I posted a printable mini comic about how to make an accordion fold comic book.

Last week, Betty Boop turned 81 years old.

On Friday, Art Spieglman's masterpiece, Maus: a Survivor's Tale, turned 25 and I posted my thoughts and impressions on the book.

Earlier this week, I started the new season of podcasts. They'll come out on the 15th of each month and if all goes as planned, the lesson plans, tutorials and resources will go with the podcast for the month. The Mediated Experience

In this panel from a forthcoming B-Side story, the characters are watching an animated film on the surface. But when you think about it, that experience is mediated by the fact that the shape of the panel is similar to a frame of film.

The characters are having an experience with film that is itself caught on film.

Yet it is a comic book, so the frame of film is mediated by the fact that this isn't really a film still, its a drawing of a film still.

So its really a drawing of a film still that captures a moment when the characters are looking at a frame of film projected onto a screen. (Whew!)

One of the themes that come up quite a bit in my comic, My Life in Records, is experiences mediated by media. (Well you might realize this theme yourself if I would finish more pages so you yourself could see this theme come up.) There is a constant soundtrack playing while things happen, which is obvious because its a comic about audiophiles. But I have tried to include other media that has influence on the character's lives such as movies, TV, Comic books, fine art, novels, etc.

If you ever stop to think about ho many lenses are in front of you at any given time, it might make you a little crazy. . . or you could make comics about it. (Oh yeah, that's crazy, too.)

Its time for another printable mini comic about how to make printable mini comics!

Download the PDF here and follow the instructions below:

1. Print this document out as a two-sided page. The words “TOP” should be at the top of both sides of the paper.

2. Fold the paper in half so that the side with the interior pages is on the outside.

3. Fold the outside edges to the center fold.

4. Unfold the paper completely and fold it in half length wise, so that the interior pages are facing out.

5. Unfold the paper completely again and cut it nearly in half.

6. Now fold it the way the folds naturally fall.

I am back teaching some Community Ed classes this summer at the local community college this summer. One of classes is a general art class for 3rd - 5th Graders. The first thing I have them do is make a sketch book.

This year, I had them put a little block print on the cover. The prompt for the cover design was to incorporate their first initial some how. The results were quite diverse and blew me away.
