How to Make Eric Carle Style Paper

Children love the work of Eric Carle and every year I do several lessons based on his collages of handmade paper.

We begin by watching a segment from a great video called Eric Carle: Picture Writer. I highly recommend adding this video to your library if you don't already have it. If you can't get the video, his website has a great slideshow of his process.

The children sit entranced as they watch Eric Carle paint, splatter and print on tissue paper. When it is dry, he cuts it up and collages it it to make his illustrations.

Then we make our own paper.

We start by drawing designs on paper with old crayons that I've melted together into new crazy crayons. (I'll post the instructions on how to make them soon.)
Next we used these foam rollers to make patterns across the paper.
We also used combs and other things to create textures in the paint.

Great post! It doesn't take my kindergarten students long to understand that Eric Carle is my favorite author! I try to tie into his work as often as possible. Years ago, when I taught a multi-age K-2 class, we had Paper Factory as one of our centers all year. The kids would keep a constant stock of collage paper in every color for projects. When any color was low, they would replenish. Most fun year ever!
