This is one of those songs that start off awkward but transcends into brilliance by the time it's finished - like many of the Mountain Goat songs I like so much. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I assumed it was deliberate - a sort of tension-release thing. By the second play, it's all more familiar and even more powerful.
